Write your first scene
Chapters and scenes
A book in Write is chapters, and each chapter is one or more scenes. The chapter is what the reader sees—the title, the number, the header at the top of the page. Scenes are how you work: a chapter with three scenes prints as one chapter with a scene break between each, and you can move, archive or rewrite a scene without touching the others.
Start the first chapter
- In a new book, click Add the first chapter. It arrives with one empty scene, open and ready.
- Click into the page and write. Enter starts a new paragraph; the page shows the real indent, font and line spacing of your page setup.
- Give the chapter its title from the … menu beside it in the manuscript list—Rename chapter—or leave it numbered.
Add more
- Another scene in this chapter: the chapter's … menu, Add a scene. It goes to the end; Move scene up and down reorder.
- Another chapter: Add a chapter at the bottom of the manuscript list, or Add a chapter here from a chapter's menu to put one in the middle.
- Parts: when a book has them, Edit part and Take out of its part on the chapter menu manage which chapters sit under which part.
Scene breaks
You do not type them. Between two scenes of one chapter the build prints the scene-break ornament from your page setup; in the editor the scenes are separate pages. If you want a break inside a scene, make it two scenes.
Numbering
Chapters number themselves in order. Move one and the numbers follow; Renumber chapters on the menu is for when you have given chapters their own numbers and want them straightened.
Setting a scene aside
Archive scene takes it out of the book without deleting it—it stays listed under archived, and Restore scene brings it back where it was. Delete scene for good is permanent and asks first.
