What an AI can and cannot do in your books

It acts as you, within your books

A connected AI signs in as you. It sees the books you can see—your own and the ones you have been invited to—and in each it has your role: everything on a book you own, suggestions and comments on a book where you are an editor. It cannot reach another person's books, and it cannot do anything in yours that you could not do yourself.

What it can do

  • Read: the Library, any book's outline, chapters and scenes as prose, notes, front and back matter, book lists, the codex, who is on a book, past builds.
  • Write: new scenes and whole chapters; revise a scene; find and replace across a book; reorder chapters and scenes; keep and tag notes; fill in front and back matter from the generators; maintain the codex—entries, facts, links, calendars, your own types and fields.
  • Organize: make series, books, parts, pen names and universes; move a book between series; set imprints; build a book to PDF or EPUB and tell you where the file is.
  • Review: leave comments and reply to them; propose changes as suggestions on a book where it may only suggest.
  • Set aside: archive a chapter, scene, note or codex entry, and restore it—nothing it archives is lost.

What it cannot do, by design

  • Delete anything. No AI, however it is connected, can delete a book, chapter, scene, note or entry. Deleting is done by a person, from the editor, from the archive.
  • Invite or remove collaborators. An invitation goes out in your name; it needs you at the keyboard.
  • Accept or reject suggestions, resolve comments, or mark a scene reviewed. Those decide what the book is; they stay with people.
  • Change your page setup from scratch. It can make and adjust build profiles; the page setup an owner has chosen is the owner's.

Overwriting

When an AI rewrites a scene it has to quote the version it read. If you (or another AI) changed the scene in between, the write is refused and the AI is told to read again and reapply its change. Two hands in one scene cannot silently undo each other.

History

Every save an AI makes is a version in the scene's history, like your own saves, and shows under your name, since the connector is you. Anything it did can be looked at and rolled back from the editor.
