What an AI can and cannot do in your books

ItThe actsshort as you, within your booksversion

A connected AI works as you, in your books, and only when you ask. It can read and write much of what you can, it can't delete anything, and everything it does is saved in the book's history where you can see it and undo it. If that's all you wanted to know, you can stop here.

It sees what you see

When an AI connects, it signs in as you. ItSo seesit can open the books you can see—open—your ownown, and theany ones you haveyou've been invited to—and in each one it has yourthe role:same everythingrole onyou do. On a book you own,own suggestionsit andcan commentsdo nearly everything; on a book where you areyou're an editor.editor it can suggest and comment, as you would. It cannotcan't reach anotheranyone person'else's books, and it cannotcan't do anything in yours that you could notcouldn't do yourself.

What it can dohelp with

  • ReadReading.: theYour Library, anya book's outline, chapters and scenes as prose, your notes, front and back matter, book lists, the codex, who iswho's on a book, and past builds.
  • WriteWriting.: Drafting new scenes andor whole chapters;chapters, reviserevising a scene;scene, findfinding and replacereplacing across a book;book, reorderputting chapters and scenes;scenes keepin order, keeping and tagtagging notes;notes, fillfilling in front and back mattermatter, fromand thelooking generators; maintainafter the codex—entries, facts, links, calendars, youreven ownnew types and fields.
  • OrganizeOrganizing.: makeMaking series, books, parts, pen names and universes; movemoving a book betweenfrom series;one setseries to another; setting imprints; buildbuilding a book to PDF or EPUB and telltelling you where the file is.
  • ReviewReviewing.: leaveLeaving comments and replyreplying to them;them, proposeand proposing changes as suggestions on a book where it mayit's only allowed to suggest.
  • SetTidying. aside: archiveArchiving a chapter, scene, note or codex entry, and restorebringing it—nothingit back. Nothing it archives is lost.

What it cannotcan't do, byon designpurpose

A few things are kept for people, no matter how an AI is connected:

  • Delete anything.Deleting. No AI, however it is connected,AI can delete a book, chapter, scene, note or entry. Deleting is donesomething byyou ado person, yourself, from the editor, from the archive.editor.
  • InviteInviting or removeremoving collaborators. An invitation goes out in your name;name, so it needswaits youfor at the keyboard.you.
  • AcceptAccepting or rejectrejecting suggestions, resolveresolving comments, or markmarking a scene reviewed. ThoseThese decide what the book is;is, theyand staythat stays with people.you.

OverwritingIt won't trample your edits

When an AI rewrites a scenescene, it has to quotesay which version of the versionscene it read. If you (or another AI) changed thethat scene in between, the meantime, the write is politely refused and the AI is told to read it again and reapply its change. Two hands in one scene cannotcan't silentlyquietly undo each other.

HistoryEverything is in the history

EveryEach save an AI makes is a version in the scene's history, just like your own saves, and it shows under your name, name—the sinceAI is acting for you. If you ever don't like what it did, open the connectorscene's is you. Anything it did can be looked athistory and rolledbring back from the editor.version you want.
